Loop Flowers
A third major type of flower are loop flowers.
Note: These flowers are done with a loop stitch, tacked down to lie flat.
This approximates the look of a petal rounded at the outside edge, tapering to a smaller inside edge.
Orient the loops toward the center and stitch the number of petals needed for the type of flower you're making. Be careful of the previous loop each time as you can easily pull it all the way through! Sometimes using a toothpick or another needle to hold the loop stable while you're working the next loop will help.
After stitching all the petals around the center, tack them down at the center insertion
with several french knots or straight stitches in ribbon one or two sizes smaller or with
spun silk perle. Make sure that you stitch on every petal.
Many many flowers have this petal structure.
For the flowers that have a number of petals spaced equally space the loops evenly
around the m iddle.. Try Morning Glory for blue flax, Briar Rose for a wild rose, or
Lavender for flox.
For flowers that have two wider petals and 3 smaller like violets and pansies, use 2
different sizes of ribbon. Use at least 4mm and 7mm, but 7mm and 13mm is more
effective if your design can incorporate ribbon that large. Use a spun silk perle to tack
down the 4mm/7mm combination and 2mm ribbon for the 7mm/13mm.
Color Combinations:
Try Purple tacked down with straight stitches in Natural or Lemon.
Another color combination is Morning Glory tacked down with Natural.
Try Bright Red tacked down with Basic Black.
Also very effective in this category are two color combinations like Aster (larger) and
Lemon (smaller) tacked down with Basic Black or try
Lavender (larger) and Rose (smaller) tacked down with Lavender.
For flowers like morning glories that look more fused around the outside, slightly overlap the loops. Natural, Morning Glory, Alpine or Lemon Creme are all good choices.
