by Colleen Madigan

These directions complete a 3 pocket purse.
Supplies Needed
(2) pieces of 8” by 12” silk twill fabric
(3) pieces of 3” by 8” silk twill fabric
(1) piece of finished cross stitch fabric approx. 8” by 12“
(2) pieces of 8” by 12” interfacing
(3) piece of 3” by 8” interfacing
2 yards matching 2 inch silk ribbon for binding
½ yard of ¼ inch ribbon cut into 2 equal pieces
button
Thread to match
Assemble supplies

Fuse interfacing to back side of finished cross stitch fabric and pieces of silk twill fabric. Press.

Make silk binding by folding silk ribbon in half lengthwise and pressing. Fold each side in toward center and press again. You may instead substitute silk satin ribbon.

Apply silk binding to top edge of each 3” by 8” piece of fused silk twill

Sew silk binding in place

Measure from bottom edge of piece of fused silk twill up 4 inches. Pin fused and bound 3” by 8” pieces of silk twill in place with right sides together. Measure from bottom edge up 7 ½ inches and pin another fused and bound piece of silk twill in place same as above.

Sew ¼ inch seam allowance on unfinished top edges.

Flip both pieces up so that the right sides are showing and press in place.

Pin remaining 3” by 8” fused silk piece to bottom edge of fabric with right side facing up. Stitch bottom edge using ¼” seam.

Layer fused and finished pieces together – silk twill with pockets, followed by fused piece of silk twill (interfacing side up), and finished piece of cross stitch fabric (interfacing side up, right side down). Pin edges and sew ¼ inch seam around entire piece. Attach (2) 8” pieces of ¼” ribbon to top center edge at seam line.

Fold silk ribbon as above. Pin around entire piece beginning at center of lower edge. Attach 2 pieces of 1/4” ribbon to center Sew binding in place. Miter join to reduce bulk.

Sew button in place and tie ribbon around button to close Pocket Book

Outside

Finished dimensions of Pocket Full of Hope are 3 ½” by 8 ¼”. Pattern may be altered to make Pocket larger. Buttons with thread loops can be added to make pockets secure. A strap can also be added to make Pocket an evening bag or purse. To make strap – cut 8 lengths of matching #5 silk perle. Tie knot in one end and loop around door handle or clamp. Split threads into (2) groups of 4 threads. Twist each group of (4) threads in same direction. When threads are very tightly twisted – hold ends together and twist both groups in opposite direction. Threads will twist around each other and make a tight cord. Tie a knot in each end and sew to bag to make strap. Top edge of Pocket can be left straight or cut with arched top to change design.
